Basic Verbs

Learn essential Arabic verbs to start forming sentences.

Verb Conjugation (Present Tense)

Arabic verbs change based on the subject. Here are the most common verbs in the present tense for I, he, she.

Note: “أنا” (I) is often omitted because the verb form already indicates the subject.

Example Sentences

  • آكل تفاحاً. (Ākul tuffāḥan.) – I eat an apple.
  • هي تشرب الحليب. (Hiya tashrab al‑ḥalīb.) – She drinks milk.
  • نذهب إلى المسجد. (Nadhhab ilā al‑masjid.) – We go to the mosque.
  • يحب القراءة. (Yuḥibb al‑qirā’ah.) – He likes reading.
  • أريد قهوة. (Urīd qahwah.) – I want coffee.
  • هو طالب. (Huwa ṭālib.) – He is a student. (using “to be” omitted in present)
  • لدي سيارة. (Ladayya sayyārah.) – I have a car. (alternative expression)

Practice Dialogue

Ahmed: ماذا تريد أن تأكل؟ (Mādhā turīd an ta’kul?) – What do you want to eat?

Fatima: أريد أن آكل دجاج مع أرز. وأحب شرب العصير أيضاً. (Urīd an ākul dajāj ma‘a ruzz. Wa uḥibb shurb al‑‘aṣīr ayḍan.) – I want to eat chicken with rice. And I like to drink juice too.

Ahmed: هل تذهب إلى المطعم؟ (Hal tadhhab ilā al‑maṭ‘am?) – Do you go to the restaurant?

Fatima: نعم، أذهب مع أصدقائي. (Na‘am, adhhab ma‘a aṣdiqā’ī.) – Yes, I go with my friends.

Ahmed: هل تحب القهوة؟ (Hal tuḥibb al‑qahwah?) – Do you like coffee?

Fatima: نعم، أحب القهوة كثيراً. (Na‘am, uḥibb al‑qahwah kathīran.) – Yes, I like coffee very much.

Exercise

Translate the following sentences into Arabic using the verbs you learned:

  1. I eat bread.
  2. She drinks water.
  3. He goes to the mosque.
  4. We want tea.
  5. They (dual) like apples.

Cultural note: In Arabic, asking “How are you?” often leads to a longer conversation. Using “إن شاء الله” (In sha’ Allah – God willing) is common when talking about future plans. Also, “الحمد لله” (Alhamdulillah – Praise be to God) is used frequently in daily speech.
Learning tip: Practice the verb conjugations by making three sentences for each verb. Use the pronouns “I, he, she”. Write them in a notebook and say them out loud. Consistency is key.
