Learn to count, tell the time, and talk about days, months, and dates.

1. Cardinal Numbers (1 – 100)

  • 1 – one
  • 2 – two
  • 3 – three
  • 4 – four
  • 5 – five
  • 6 – six
  • 7 – seven
  • 8 – eight
  • 9 – nine
  • 10 – ten
  • 11 – eleven
  • 12 – twelve
  • 13 – thirteen
  • 14 – fourteen
  • 15 – fifteen
  • 16 – sixteen
  • 17 – seventeen
  • 18 – eighteen
  • 19 – nineteen
  • 20 – twenty
  • 21 – twenty‑one
  • 30 – thirty
  • 40 – forty
  • 50 – fifty
  • 60 – sixty
  • 70 – seventy
  • 80 – eighty
  • 90 – ninety
  • 100 – one hundred
  • 1,000 – one thousand
  • 1,000,000 – one million

Examples:
25 → twenty‑five
47 → forty‑seven
99 → ninety‑nine
128 → one hundred twenty‑eight
2,500 → two thousand five hundred

2. Ordinal Numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd...)

Used for dates and positions.

  • 1st – first | 2nd – second | 3rd – third | 4th – fourth | 5th – fifth
  • 6th – sixth | 7th – seventh | 8th – eighth | 9th – ninth | 10th – tenth
  • 20th – twentieth | 21st – twenty‑first | 30th – thirtieth | 100th – hundredth

3. Telling the Time

Two common ways to say the time:

  • Digital style: “It is seven fifteen” (7:15), “It is ten thirty” (10:30), “It is five forty-five” (5:45)
  • Traditional style:
    • 7:00 → seven o’clock
    • 7:05 → five past seven
    • 7:15 → quarter past seven
    • 7:30 → half past seven
    • 7:45 → quarter to eight
    • 7:50 → ten to eight

4. Days, Months & Dates

Days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.

Saying the date: “Today is the fifth of April” or “Today is April fifth”. Year: 2026 → twenty twenty-six.

Practice Dialogue

Ahmed: Excuse me, what time is it?

Fatima: It’s half past three. (3:30)

Ahmed: Thanks. What day is today?

Fatima: Today is Tuesday, the fifteenth of May.

Ahmed: Oh, my birthday is on the twenty‑fourth of May. I will be twenty‑five years old.

Fatima: Happy birthday early! How many people are coming?

Ahmed: Around thirty‑five people.

Cultural note: In the US, the date is often written Month/Day/Year (e.g., 05/15/2026). In the UK and many other countries, Day/Month/Year (15/05/2026) is used. When writing dates in words, both “15 May 2026” and “May 15, 2026” are acceptable.
Learning tip: Practice saying the time every time you look at a clock. Try to read numbers you see on price tags, license plates, etc., to familiarise yourself with them.
