Forming numbers: For numbers like 21, say “twenty” + “one” in Urdu: اکیس (ikkees). 22 – بائیس (baaees). 33 – تینتیس (teenteess). 45 – پینتالیس (pentaalees). 99 – ننانوے (ninnaanwe). 101 – ایک سو ایک (ek sau ek). 200 – دو سو (do sau). 1000 – ایک ہزار (ek hazaar).

Using Numbers in Everyday Life

میری عمر 25 سال ہے۔ (Meri umar pachees saal hai.) – I am 25 years old.
یہ کتاب 500 روپے کی ہے۔ (Yeh kitaab paanch sau rupay ki hai.) – This book costs 500 rupees.
آج تاریخ 15 اپریل ہے۔ (Aaj taareekh pandrah April hai.) – Today is the 15th of April.
میرے پاس تین سو روپے ہیں۔ (Mere paas teen sau rupay hain.) – I have 300 rupees.

Practice Dialogue (At a shop)

Seller: السلام علیکم! کیا چاہیے؟ (Assalamu alaikum! Kya chahiye?)

Buyer: مجھے دو کلو سیب چاہیے۔ (Mujhe do kilo seb chahiye.) – I want two kilos of apples.

Seller: ایک کلو 120 روپے کا ہے۔ دو کلو 240 روپے ہوں گے۔ (Ek kilo 120 rupay ka hai. Do kilo 240 rupay honge.)

Buyer: ٹھیک ہے۔ کیا آپ کے پاس پانچ سو روپے کے نوٹ ہیں؟ (Theek hai. Kya aap ke paas paanch sau rupay ke note hain?)

Seller: جی ہاں۔ (Jee haan.)

Buyer: تو مجھے 260 روپے واپس دینے ہیں۔ (To mujhe do sau saatth rupay waapas dene hain.) – So you have to give me 260 rupees back.

Cultural note: In South Asia, counting on fingers often starts with the thumb as “one”. When buying goods, bargaining is common – prices are often negotiable. Learning numbers will help you shop confidently.

Learning tip: Practice counting objects around you – fruits, books, steps. Write numbers in Urdu on sticky notes and stick them on corresponding items (e.g., “ایک” on one glass, “دو” on two pens).
