Day 1

Tones & Pinyin

Master the 4 tones + neutral tone, and learn Pinyin – the key to speaking Mandarin correctly.

What is Pinyin?

Pinyin is the official romanization system for Standard Chinese. It uses Latin letters to represent sounds, allowing you to pronounce Mandarin without memorizing characters first. Critical rule: Tones are marked above vowels (ā, á, ǎ, à).

Writing Practice – Tone Mark Rules

Tone marks are always placed above the main vowel. The order of priority: a → o → e → i → u → ü. If both i and u appear, the mark goes on the second one (e.g., duì → u has mark).

Examples:

  • māma (mother) – mark on first 'a'
  • nǐ hǎo (hello) – mark on 'i' and 'a'
  • xiè xie (thank you) – mark on 'e' for first syllable, second neutral
  • duì (correct) – mark on 'u'

Practice: Write the pinyin with correct tone marks for: "good" (hao3), "china" (zhong1 guo2), "friend" (peng2 you3).

Show answers

hǎo, Zhōngguó, péngyou

First Phrases with Tones

Nǐ hǎo! (Hello – tone 3 + tone 3 → 3rd tone sandhi: nǐ becomes ní in natural speech)

Xiè xie. (Thank you – 4th tone + neutral)

Duō shǎo qián? (How much money? – 1st, 3rd, 2nd)

Wǒ jiào Lǐ Huá. (My name is Li Hua – 3rd, 4th, 3rd, 2nd)

Exercise: Identify the Tone

Match each pinyin word to its correct tone number (1,2,3,4 or neutral).

  1. māma (mother) → a) 1+1 b) 1+neutral c) 4+1
  2. wǒ (I/me) → a) 1st tone b) 2nd tone c) 3rd tone
  3. hǎo (good) → a) 3rd tone b) 4th tone c) 2nd tone
  4. bù (no/not) → a) 1st tone b) 4th tone c) neutral
  5. ma (question particle) → a) 1st tone b) 4th tone c) neutral
Show answers

1. b (1+neutral: māma)
2. c (3rd: wǒ)
3. a (3rd: hǎo)
4. b (4th: bù)
5. c (neutral)

Cultural note: Mandarin Chinese has over 1 billion speakers. Tones are not just optional – they change meaning. For example, "mā" (mother) vs "mǎ" (horse). Practice tones daily to avoid funny misunderstandings!
Learning tip: Use hand gestures while speaking: high flat for 1st tone, rising for 2nd, dipping for 3rd, falling for 4th. Record yourself and compare with native audio. Apps like Pleco or YouTube have excellent tone drills.
