Day 2

Hangul Vowels (한글 모음)

Master the 10 basic Korean vowels – pronunciation, writing, and combining with consonants.

Understanding Hangul Vowels

Korean vowels are based on three elements: (sky – dot), (earth – horizontal line), (human – vertical line). There are 10 basic vowels and combined vowels (diphthongs) which we will cover later. Vowels alone cannot start a syllable – they need the silent consonant ㅇ (ieung) as a placeholder.

The 10 Basic Vowels

VowelRomanizationPronunciation (like...)Example syllable
a'a' in "father"아 (a) – "ah"
ya'ya' in "yacht"야 (ya)
eo'u' in "cup" (more open)어 (eo)
yeo'yu' in "young"여 (yeo)
o'o' in "go" (rounded lips)오 (o)
yo'yo' in "yogurt"요 (yo)
u'oo' in "moon"우 (u)
yu'you'유 (yu)
eu'u' in "put" (unrounded)으 (eu)
i'ee' in "see"이 (i) – "ee"

Vowel Formation Principles

Bright vowels (양성 모음): ㅏ, ㅗ, ㅑ, ㅛ – associated with light, positive sounds
Dark vowels (음성 모음): ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅕ, ㅠ – associated with dark, negative sounds
Neutral vowel: ㅡ, ㅣ – can pair with either
Horizontal vs Vertical: ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ, ㅡ are horizontal; ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ, ㅣ are vertical

Pronunciation Practice: Minimal Pairs

  • ㅏ vs ㅓ: 아 (child) vs 어 (uh/oh) – mouth more open for ㅏ
  • ㅗ vs ㅜ: 오 (five) vs 우 (right/left) – lips rounded for ㅗ, more closed for ㅜ
  • ㅔ vs ㅐ: (modern Korean often merges them) – 애 is more open, 에 more closed
  • ㅡ vs ㅓ: 으 (eu – no English equivalent) vs 어 (eo – similar to 'u' in cup)

Tip: Listen to native speakers on YouTube or apps like "Talk To Me In Korean".

Forming Syllables with ㅇ (Placeholder)

Since vowels cannot start a syllable, we use the consonant ㅇ (ieung) which is silent at the beginning. The consonant and vowel combine:

Words Using Basic Consonants + Vowels

Exercise

Choose the correct vowel to complete the syllable (write the vowel symbol):

  1. 아 (ㅇ + ?) → a) ㅏ    b) ㅓ    c) ㅗ
  2. 여 (ㅇ + ?) → a) ㅕ    b) ㅑ    c) ㅠ
  3. 오 (ㅇ + ?) → a) ㅜ    b) ㅗ    c) ㅡ
  4. 유 (ㅇ + ?) → a) ㅛ    b) ㅠ    c) ㅣ
  5. 이 (ㅇ + ?) → a) ㅣ    b) ㅡ    c) ㅐ

Write the Korean word for "cucumber" and "milk".

Show answers

1. a) ㅏ
2. a) ㅕ
3. b) ㅗ
4. b) ㅠ
5. a) ㅣ
Cucumber: 오이 (o-i)
Milk: 우유 (u-yu)

Cultural note: Hangul vowels are based on philosophical concepts – the dot represents heaven (ㆍ, now replaced by a short line in ㅏ, ㅓ, etc.), the horizontal line represents earth (ㅡ), and the vertical line represents human (ㅣ). This makes Hangul one of the most scientifically designed alphabets in the world.
Learning tip: Use mnemonics: ㅏ looks like a branch (a for "apple"), ㅓ looks like a door (eo sounds like "uh", door open). Practice writing each vowel 10 times while saying the sound out loud. Combine consonants you learned on Day 1 with vowels to form real syllables.
