Day 1

Hangul Consonants (한글 자음)

Master the 14 basic Korean consonants – reading, writing, and pronunciation.

What is Hangul?

Hangul (한글) is the Korean alphabet, created in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great. It is a scientific and logical writing system. Hangul consists of 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels. Today we focus on the consonants.

ㄴ → ㇀ + 丶 (top to bottom left, then right)
ㄷ → 一 + ㇁ + 一 (like a rectangle corner)
ㄹ → ㇀ + 一 + ㇁ (complex – curve then horizontal)
ㅁ → ㅁ (square shape, three strokes)
ㅂ → ㅣ + ㅡ + ㅣ (two verticals with bottom)

Tip: Watch online videos for animated stroke order – it helps muscle memory.

Cultural note: Hangul is celebrated annually on "Hangul Day" (October 9th in South Korea). Unlike many other writing systems, Hangul was deliberately created to be easy to learn – King Sejong said, "A wise man can learn it in a morning, a fool can learn it in ten days." You are already on your way!
Learning tip: Use flashcards (physical or digital) for each consonant – show the symbol, say the name and sound. Write them daily for 10 minutes. Sing the Hangul consonant song (available on YouTube) to memorize sequence.
