Greetings & Polite Expressions

  • السلام عليكم – Peace be upon you
  • وعليكم السلام – And upon you peace
  • مرحباً – Hello
  • كيف حالك؟ – How are you?
  • بخير، الحمد لله – Fine, praise be to God
  • شكراً – Thank you
  • عفواً – You’re welcome / Excuse me
  • لو سمحت – Please (to male)
  • مع السلامة – Goodbye
  • تصبح على خير – Good night

Asking for Help / Directions

  • هل يمكنك مساعدتي؟ – Can you help me?
  • أين الحمام؟ – Where is the bathroom?
  • أين المطار / محطة القطار؟ – Where is the airport / train station?
  • كم الساعة؟ – What time is it?
  • كم الثمن؟ – How much is it?
  • لا أفهم – I don’t understand
  • هل تتكلم الإنجليزية؟ – Do you speak English?

Shopping & Dining

  • كم سعر هذا؟ – How much is this?
  • هذا غالي جداً – This is too expensive
  • هل لديك سعر أفضل؟ – Do you have a better price?
  • أريد هذا – I want this
  • القائمة من فضلك – The menu, please
  • أنا جائع / عطشان – I am hungry / thirsty
  • الفاتورة من فضلك – The bill, please

Emergencies

  • النجدة! / ساعدني! – Help!
  • اتصل بالإسعاف / الشرطة – Call an ambulance / the police
  • أنا تائه – I am lost
  • أحتاج إلى طبيب – I need a doctor
  • أين أقرب مستشفى؟ – Where is the nearest hospital?

Practice Dialogue (At a restaurant)

Waiter: السلام عليكم! تفضلوا. (Assalamu alaikum! Tafaḍḍalū.) – Hello! Welcome.

Customer: شكراً. القائمة من فضلك. (Shukran. Al‑qā’imah min faḍlik.) – Thank you. The menu, please.

Waiter: تفضل. ماذا تريد أن تأكل؟ (Tafaḍḍal. Mādhā turīd an ta’kul?) – Here you are. What would you like to eat?

Customer: أريد دجاج مع أرز. كم السعر؟ (Urīd dajāj ma‘a ruzz. Kam al‑si‘r?) – I want chicken with rice. How much?

Waiter: بـ 20 ريالاً. (Bi‑20 riyālan.) – 20 riyals.

Customer: حسناً. والفاتورة من فضلك. (Ḥasanan. Wa al‑fātūrah min faḍlik.) – Okay. And the bill, please.

Waiter: تفضل. شكراً. مع السلامة. (Tafaḍḍal. Shukran. Ma‘a as‑salāmah.) – Here you are. Thank you. Goodbye.

Exercise

Translate the following English phrases into Arabic:

  1. Thank you very much.
  2. Where is the bathroom?
  3. How much is this?
  4. I don’t understand.

Cultural note: In Arab culture, it is common to refuse an offer (e.g., of food or drink) politely at first before accepting. Saying “شكراً” (thank you) and “عفواً” (you’re welcome) is essential for polite interaction. When entering a home, removing shoes is customary. Learning these phrases shows respect.
Learning tip: Practice these phrases by role‑playing with a friend or in front of a mirror. Use flashcards to memorise the most common ones. Listen to Arabic media to hear how they are pronounced naturally.
