Survival Dialogue

Practice real-life conversations: restaurant, shopping, doctor, meeting a friend.

Dialogue 1: At a Restaurant

Waiter: السلام عليكم! تفضلوا. (Assalamu alaikum! Tafaḍḍalū.) – Hello! Welcome.

Customer: شكراً. القائمة من فضلك. (Shukran. Al‑qā’imah min faḍlik.) – Thank you. The menu, please.

Waiter: تفضل. ماذا تريد أن تأكل؟ (Tafaḍḍal. Mādhā turīd an ta’kul?) – Here you are. What would you like to eat?

Customer: أريد دجاج مع أرز. كم السعر؟ (Urīd dajāj ma‘a ruzz. Kam al‑si‘r?) – I want chicken with rice. How much?

Waiter: بـ 20 ريالاً. (Bi‑20 riyālan.) – 20 riyals.

Customer: حسناً. والفاتورة من فضلك. (Ḥasanan. Wa al‑fātūrah min faḍlik.) – Okay. And the bill, please.

Waiter: تفضل. شكراً. مع السلامة. (Tafaḍḍal. Shukran. Ma‘a as‑salāmah.) – Here you are. Thank you. Goodbye.

Dialogue 2: Shopping for Clothes

Customer: كم سعر هذا القميص؟ (Kam si‘r hādhā al‑qamīṣ?) – How much is this shirt?

Seller: بـ 50 ريالاً. (Bi‑50 riyālan.) – 50 riyals.

Customer: غالي جداً! هل هناك خصم؟ (Ghālī jiddan! Hal hunāk khaṣm?) – Very expensive! Is there a discount?

Seller: حسناً، 40 ريالاً فقط. (Ḥasanan, 40 riyālan faqaṭ.) – Okay, only 40 riyals.

Customer: اتفقنا. سآخذه. (Ittafaqnā. Sa’ākhudhuh.) – Agreed. I’ll take it.

Dialogue 3: At the Doctor’s Clinic

Doctor: ما بك؟ أين الألم؟ (Mā bika? Ayna al‑alam?) – What’s wrong? Where is the pain?

Patient: أشعر بصداع وحرارة. (Ash‘ur biṣudā‘ wa ḥarārah.) – I have a headache and fever.

Doctor: كم درجة حرارتك؟ (Kam darajat ḥarāratik?) – What is your temperature?

Patient: 38 درجة. (38 darajah.) – 38 degrees.

Doctor: خذ هذا الدواء واسترح. (Khudh hādhā al‑dawā’ wa istariḥ.) – Take this medicine and rest.

Patient: شكراً يا دكتور. (Shukran yā duktūr.) – Thank you, Doctor.

Dialogue 4: Meeting a Friend

Ahmed: السلام عليكم! كيف حالك؟ (Assalamu alaikum! Kayfa ḥāluka?) – Hello! How are you?

Fatima: وعليكم السلام! بخير، الحمد لله. وأنت؟ (Wa alaikum assalam! Bikhayr, alhamdulillah. Wa ant?) – Fine, praise be to God. And you?

Ahmed: الحمد لله. أين تذهبين؟ (Alhamdulillah. Ayna tadhhabīna?) – Praise be to God. Where are you going?

Fatima: أذهب إلى المكتبة لأشتري كتاباً. (Adhhab ilā al‑maktabah li‑ashtarī kitāban.) – I’m going to the library to buy a book.

Ahmed: مع السلامة! (Ma‘a as‑salāmah!) – Goodbye!

Fatima: مع السلامة! (Ma‘a as‑salāmah!)

Role‑Play Practice

Try to recreate one of the above dialogues with a partner. Change the items, prices, or symptoms. Use vocabulary from previous days.

Practice scenario: You are at a fruit stall. Ask for the price of apples, bargain, and buy two kilos.
